Kuala Penyu gets a 52-ft visitor

Kuala Penyu: A 52-feet black whale of yet undetermined specie became the talk of the town, Thursday, when it showed up at the tributary of Sungai Sitompok, near Kg Hujung Air, at 9am.
However, it was dead by 8pm despite a 12-hour effort to first guide it back to sea using ropes and pouring sea water over its 13-ft diameter body.
Sabah Parks personnel in a boat from Pulau Tiga spotted it and alerted the Fishery department officer-in charge, here, Julin Bagang, upon finding it stranded near the river's shallow waters.
Fisheries personnel then joined fishermen and Sabah Parks personnel in a three-hour effort to guide it back to sea but without success due to its massive size. It eventually ended up stranded on the beach some 200-300 meters from where it was first found.
"We believe the whale lost its sense of direction while migrating," Julin said, adding the only hope of giving it another try would have been around midnight during high tide.
It was likely a "Balen" specie and a juvenile one at that. Julin said it was the second whale sighting here but the biggest yet. He said they would bury it at the beach for the time being.
